Garlic and herb creamy French cheese spread on ham for gourmay bite-size treats for appetizers with a French twist.
What about simple bites as in France for l’apéro ?
This might be one of the most easy recipe to make, fun to prepare with kids, all you need to do here is to spread cheese on ham slices, roll up and slice to get bite-size treats.
This is an appetizer that the French love to do at home, I actually discovered it in my husband’s family at the beginning of our wedding. There was always ham and Boursin cheese in the fridge, you know, in case we wanted to prepare things for l’apéro, as appetizer ins an important moment in France.
The secret here is to have cheese at the right temperature and take it out of the fridge 5 to 10 minutes at least before spreading it on ham. Too cold it will be difficult to spread and might tear ham, to warm, at room temperature for example, it will be easy to spread but might get messy when you’ll slice the rolls.
What is Boursin Cheese
Boursin is a renown French creamy cheese. Indeed an iconic cheese in France that many French buy at the supermarket without event planning any special recipe nor occasion and often have in the Fridge. Often served on cheese platter, there are lots of French homecoming recipes using Boursin. The brand describes it as “a blend of delicate garlic fragrant parsley and mild chives artfully folded into authentic gourmet cheese and wrapped in signature foil“. How nicely described! Boursin is actually a pasteurized milk and cream soft cheese flavored with garlic and fines herbes (chives and parsley). There are now many variations of the original recipe with pepper, nuts, fig…
Adapt the recipe with other cheeses
The recipe here uses Boursin cheese but you can do those rolls with any other fresh cheese : cream cheese, fresh goat cheese… that you can flavor by adding minced onion, shallot or garlic, herbs (fines herbes as we say in French), pepper or spices. I’ll try to share with you soon how to make homemade Boursin cheese. Stay tuned.
My daughter even like with cured ham so why not using cooked chicken thin slices, prosciutto or Parma ham or even smoked salmon? Have fun!
